Allan Herschell Wood Carousel Horse

Just picked up this beautiful Allan Herschell all-wood carousel horse at a local auction for $140.00. Yes, it needs restoration but it won't be difficult. For the most part, the wood is sound and will only require minor replacements. Questions...where to sell this? Any idea on the value? I would love to tackle the restoration job myself but I have no idea on the original colors or the type of paint to use. I can't imagine this being worth more than $500-1000.00 on a good day, restored. Any suggestions, hints or tips? Am I better off having this as a good start to the winter fire wood collection?

 

Don't sell this short. Restoration is acceptable on these and can be the difference between a good sale and a great one. Just found this site for info that looks promising ........

As with so many areas of collecting you have to know something about the subject to make even a reasonable comment and I know nothing about the field of carousel horses.

Anyway, I did find this auction for a similar style horse they called a blanket pony, sadly only sold for $170 back in 2012 but another sold for $2000 in 2006 with some others ending somewhere in between. I have no idea if they're comparable but those horses on Brad's post are pretty amazing (and expensive!).

That second link (the good one) even shows a before restoration picture. Don't know how much restoration costs or if someone with some time and a knack for art could do it. The un-restored almost seem like folk art to me.

 

I like it. It sure would be nice to see him restored. If he wasn't so messed up around his eye he would almost be fine, to me anyway. I think he has a good look and certainly doesn't belong in the woodpile. Nice score!
