I purchased this eagle from a lady who thought her dad had brought it back from Mexico in the late 1940's or early 1950's. I have searched for eagles online and, have found lots of eagles from Mexico but none that look quite like this one. A friend thinks it is American made and figures it dates to 1950s. I thought it was chalk ware, but now I think it might be plaster. It is hollow in the base (can't see further up into the eagle part) and is heavy, but not as heavy as one would think for an item that measures 27"h x 12"w at the base center and x 22" from eagle beak to tail feathers tip.
The other question I have is on one of the small pieces sitting in front of the eagle.. the 3 little boys playing tug o war. I am trying to find it's mate. I believe it is a book holder and not a doorstop. Would period be 1930's? Thank you.

Do you think the wood that he is sitting on is plaster? or just the eagle?
Can we see a picture of the bottom, please.

I agree the 3 boys look like a book end. A better picture of it might help.
The quail looks like Crystal D'Arques (sp).

BTW, chalk ware is made of plaster of Paris so they are the same thing. Do you see any air vents in the eagle? It could be ceramic. If you tap the piece does it sound solid or hollow?

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Not Mexican, in my eyes, but still gawgeussss! And HUGE!

I think it would look great in a landing/foyer or on a porch (with whatever weatherization would be needed) of a nice old country house or even MCM!

    Pretty bird.

The base is also chalkware and I got a pic which was not easy. I remembered why I hadn't taken a pic of the underside.. it is a pain to try and adjust to capture a pic straight line so I did it sideways, but doesn't show where the chalk gets thicker the further it goes up the mold(?). eagle004.jpg

The crystal piece is a momma seal and her pup. Got it in Nova Scotia, but no clue as to maker.

It's not made of plaster/caulk. Those pieces are solid because hollow pieces would be too fragile to stand up to handling etc. From the pic, I'd say it is ceramic unless you can easily scratch the inside surface and get caulk dust.

The base/wood area may be glazed. I recall a hobby glaze that simulated wood. The rest may be painted with acrylic paint with a spray on clear finish.

Oh it is plaster/chalk. Not ceramic of any kind. It is heavy yes, but hollow. Mind you it does get thicker the further up it goes into the mold. I am trying to see how they might have constructed it. I am sure it is a mold, but thus far not found the joint lines. Thank you.
