I could not find any marks for a manufacturer. The printing looks like it was hand printed. There is some light crazing on the dial. The thermometer isn't working but the weather part is accurate. That dust is under the glass. I haven't been able to find one that looks like this. Any thoughts on age and/or maker? 6 1/2". Thank you.

I've had nearly identical marked only Germany or West Germany, possibly made by Schatz and marketed by Airguide

I have had similar. It is a standard aneroid barometer of about 1900. The French invented the type and were main makers, exporting them to Britain and all over Europe. Fairly soon many countries started making this type of mechanism in a multitude of different cases. The adjusting screw on the back is to adjust for the height to correct to a sea level equivalent pressure.

THis would appear to be a pretty utilitarian model.

Thank you AF. The Shatz had similar faces but nothing really matched and the case shapes were totally different. I couldn't find anything similar using Airguide.

Using your information, I searched French Barometers and found two with the same shape but a different face and thermometer or no thermometer.

    Check out this price!

Here is another, same shape without a thermometer but it has a stamp on the back.

    antiques.com is a joke

I don't think the brass of your case is older than 1950

One I had had a cracked glass. When I opened to replace the glass I found marks inside. It was a puzzle as to how open best and I don't recall how that was now.

It's a beautiful barometer. How do you know it's not working?

I've had it for a while and the weather is very accurate but the temp on the thermometer won't budge.

You mean the barometer itself works, but the thermometer is broken. Ookay.

Terry, I thought about trying to get it open to clean out that dust but changed my mind. It doesn't look like it would be easy.

FYI - the brass is much darker than it appears in my photographs. My lights made it look a lot brighter and shiny. If it isn't raining tomorrow, I will post a picture taken in natural light.

I agree the antiques.com price is very much "We saw you Coming" scale.

To test aneroid barometers, place them in a clear plastic bag, hold the bag closed and squeeze. This increases the trapped air pressure and the needle should move. It's a crude test but quick and easy and establishes that the aneroid capsule is not leaky ot the mechanism broken.

A magnifying glass and sunlight will test the thermometer, just don't fry it. If it is not behing glass obviously body heat will do it.

Reamur scale indicates an early model. If there is no mention of weather conditions and the pressure scale goes up to about 34 inches, it is a mining barometer.
