This was a wedding gift in Italy 1984 and all the identification papers/box/marks are gone or are no longer visible. I need help finding any information possible about the piece. My best guess is it is a Kato Kogei piece, but I really don't know and haven't been able to find any other piece like it. IMG_0124.JPG IMG_0128.JPG IMG_0125.JPG Can anyone help?

Hi RS81 - and welcome! What tune does it play? It might help us date it.

The tune is "Where do I begin" from Love Story. It's not an antique, you're right. I'm sorry. I'd still be interested in any information about it if possible though.

I suspect it is Japanese in origin.

I agree with cluttered. The oval circle on the wooden base looks just about right for the remains of a "Made in Japan" or just a "Japan" label. In the late 1960's and early 1970's there was a bit of a revival of romantic films (Love Story, Dr. Zhivago) with popular theme songs. About the same time music boxes were also coming into a revival. Many of the music boxes from that time were made by anonymous manufacturers in Japan. Yours is a lovely example but I'm not sure there's much information out there to be found.
