So I found this statue it is 2 ft tall. No markings. I did some research and that's how I found Garry Apsit. I just want to confirm if that is right or not.
So it was easy to find "Gary Apsit" but I don't see an impressed stamp for his studio in your picture? There should be one.
I am not sure what is made out of. But I am going to say cast plaster it weights about 13.5 lbs. Too heavy to be chalkware. In my search I found that his later works were not marked. So there is nothing on the back or on the bottom.
Perhaps you misunderstood what it says in his obituary (quoted here) "Eventually, it became a hobby for people to purchase the plain white plaster cowboys and clowns and nautical-themed items and paint them themselves. Many of these pieces can still be found in homes today, with "APSIT BROS. OF CALIF." stamped into the plaster. In 1977, Gary opened Gary Apsit Studios and began making cement garden...." These pieces were still marked. Just not hand signed by him" Given that, I would not assume that an unmarked piece was actually his without some secondary piece of documentation.
