I have this German table, chairs and cabinet. It was bought over 60 years ago at a castle auction in Germany.

The table has a mechanical folding structure. Theme appears gothic with highly detailed face carvings. No names or dates appear on the items.

Can anyone tell me anything regarding the history, wood and possible value?

 

Guesses Gothic revival, 19th-early 20th century, it is not period gothic (12-15th centuries) or medieval. Not a clue on value but, it's large size does not help in today's market, at least in america, europe could be different.

 

do you know in which castle it was bought ?
without provenence a hard sales. people that still live in big houses with high ceilings want to know that.
no markings or pencil scribbles in the drawers or on the back ?

 

It is the same here in the Netherlands and neighbouring Belgium. Plus Gothic Revival is difficult to sell. It is like the ornate Belgian cabinets we can't give away here. Beautifully carved, just like these pieces, but no one cares.

Proof of provenance could possibly help a little, but a castle provenance usually helps with older pieces, not 19th century.

 

Ditto what the others said. Recently sold a similarly ornate European set in our store without original chairs for just under $1000.00. It had 2 large serving pieces and a huge table with 10 leaves. The 8 chairs were less ornate from the 20s or so but went with the set well. Had very little interest in it and hand to break the set up to sell it. Ended up sending the largest piece to auction.

 

another problem is that it's not of one style but a typical mishmash of the German Historismus - what the bourgeoisie after 1850s thought to be in one of the classical styles.

 

The whole “Ensemble” looks wonderful to me, but agree, because of the size of it all, unless you find someone with a HUGE HOUSE, and wants a castle connection (if you can verify that) it might be a hard sell......all that being said, I think those chairs are to DIE FOR......SO GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
