This old inkwell I found recently, in the form of a French armoured car from the First World War, is missing its glass insert that held ink. Can anyone recommend a source for a replacement insert?

They're easily found on eBay. Just search "glass inkwell insert", or "glass inkwell liner" (they also come in porcelain).

BE WARNED: they come in different sizes, so measure your inkwell cavity properly, first, before picking a size and ordering.

I bought one for my antique silver inkwell, and it fits perfectly!

Antique inkwell liners rarely, if ever, fit 100% perfectly, so expect a little bit of play-and-wobble, but so long as it sits in there without dropping through, or getting stuck, it should be the right size.

Unusual, isn’t it? Made by Simon et Rivolet, I believe.

That is amazing! Not the sort of thing that usually interests me, but this is an exception!

Thanks to everyone who helped. I ordered a white porcelain insert that should, based on the measurements, fit my inkwell perfectly. I would have preferred clear glass, as the original would have been, but beggars can’t be choosers!

On the balance of probability, yours was probably porcelain to begin with. Most were.
