Came across this vanity in SoCal for $60 earlier this month, can anyone help me identify more info on the maker and time frame of this piece. I don’t have much pics but one. What I’ve searched is minimal and there isn’t much info of the manufacturer on the label. Thanks in advance! Have a great evening. PSA: I wasn’t able to upload pic of label but it says Batchelar & son Ltd the depository croydon.

Far from home, isn't it? Can you try again with posting photograph of label? Labels, their information and design, help determine dating.

When you post your pictures, there is a box marked "Full Image". Let's us see the bigger picture.

If the edit box is still showing in your original posting, click Edit, More Options, next to each picture will be Full Image. Click and Save. Your pictures will enlarge.
The edit box disappears after a while. It's near the Report and Best Answer if it's still there.

    Hi @tbird5.0
I know it's confusing when you first start posting.

You already have this thread going. So starting a new thread with the same pictures only confuses the issue of getting you help.

Keep in mind this is an international board. People come and go at all hours. Be sure to keep checking back to see what has been added.

    Hey tbird:

You have a washstand in the cottage style, a subset of the Eastlake style, made ca. 1890. Its a bargain at $60.00. Almost sad, really.

Unlike many washstands of the era, this was probably made as a stand-alone object, not part of a bedroom set as many were. Your washstand was made in England, probably for export. Batchelar & Son was not the maker; the company owned a warehouse in Croydon (South London), storing furniture, luggage, pictures, etc. Bachelor & Son was founded some time in the mid 19th century.

I have a washstand like yours (not as nice) that was made in Bournemouth, also ca. 1890, for export to America. A nice little piece, but clearly made with the utmost efficiency. The makers of your piece (not Batchelar & Son) did better at taking their time, obviously aiming for a more upscale market.

Very interesting. What exactly is a washstand? Are you keeping yours for personal use or is there a market for them?

During the 1970's, British Ilse furniture, stain glass, ceramics, etc., were shipped to the USA by the container. I worked for an antique dealer on the East Coast who purchased containers. One could purchase a container of pub tables, washstands, kitchenware, chifferon robes/wardrobes/armoires, etc. This is how it possibly got to the US. Antique dealers from California would buy by the moving van. Sorry, if this is TMI.

Interesting, thank you for all the info. In the contrary I like reading into history. I don’t have intentions to get rid of it but, do you know how much they are valued at?

Hi @tbird5.0....yours is a lovely washstand, nicely described by @Ghopper1924!!! Here's what might typically go on top of a washstand.....they were very functional, as the name implies!! If you go on ebay, and check out the SOLD listings, you might get a feel for the value.....

Beautiful piece of marble on that. And you are fortunate to have the mirror backing, a lot of times they are separated and lost!
