Featured Help with Satsuma mark, I think.

    Picked up this little cup and saucer the other day. It looks to me that the lower mark is different on the two pieces?
    Hope someone can tell me about these marks.

    Lovely, Mikey. I think it is Black Kutani ware, but @Ce BCA will be able to tell you more.

    Isn't that the Shimazu family Crest? That's why I thought Satsuma?

    I think the marks are both generic Satsuma marks, given the Shimazu crest at the top. They look to have the same characters, but the bottom one is squished--different handwriting--and just say Satsuma. After looking on gotheborg, I think this was probably made for sale to American military bases and tourists after WWII.

    Yes as @janetpjohn said it does say 'Satsuma' in Japanese and the crest above is for the Shimazu clan. Given the mark it will probably be pre WW2, Taisho period or early Showa.

    That makes more sense. Friends on fb collecting Japanese are saying Taisho.
