How do I care for and clean my diamond ring?

Hey everyone! I’ve had my diamond engagement ring for a few months now, and I want to make sure I’m taking proper care of it. I’ve heard different advice on cleaning methods, but I want to avoid doing anything that could damage the ring or the diamond itself.

I recently read a blog on DiamondNet where they gave some really useful tips. According to them, the safest way to clean your diamond ring at home is by using a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap. They suggest letting the ring soak for about 20-30 minutes, then gently scrubbing it with a soft toothbrush. It sounded pretty simple, but they also mentioned avoiding harsh chemicals like bleach or chlorine, as those can damage both the metal and the stone over time.

They also recommended getting the ring professionally cleaned once or twice a year, which I’m thinking about doing to keep the sparkle going. I’ve heard ultrasonic cleaners can be risky if you’re not sure about the stone’s setting, so I’m a little cautious about using one.

For anyone with more experience—does this sound right to you? How do you usually clean and care for your diamond rings? Any tips for making sure the ring stays in great condition long-term?

Pop it in a drop of gin or vodka for a few minutes, then an old toothbrush.

I clean shell cameos with dish soap, tap water & a child's toothbrush, so it's not going to harm a diamond. A quick way to restore glitter is to rub in toothpaste with a finger, then rinse thoroughly.

Diamonds are not at risk of being scratched; you have to take a little care they don't scratch other things. But when it comes to hard knocks, they're actually kind of fragile. Tiny chips to the edges can develop over time from the inevitable banging into things with the hand & ring.

Congratulations on your engagement & welcome to the forum. :)

I wash mine and moms jewelry in warm soapy water with a few drops of ammonia in it. They come out quite sparkly.

Dish soap, water, toothbrush...yep that's all you need. If you take it to a jeweler for ultrasonic, they should look at the setting beforehand to make sure it's secure before cleaning.

Ultrasonic can rattle stones loose, if you're wondering.

I'm in the alcohol camp.:wacky: But soapy water can't do any harm, as long as you rinse it well afterwards.

Funny thing....my estate jeweler used Windex to get fingers off of people's rings when they got stuck....you should see how diamonds look after being Windexed.

Windex is a common trick for cleaning as it's just ammonia. It works too, but I don't love the smell.

The force of the Windex was strong with that movie.
