I Purchased this basket today. Please help identify

    basket1.jpg basket2.jpg basket3.jpg basket4.jpg basket5.jpg basket6.jpg I purchased this today in a consignment. I was told it was Native american. I cannot be certain though. Can anyone Identify it?

    Yes, a sweetgrass basket in the Gullah tradition.

    A nice article. Note that the sweetgrass used in these baskets - Muhlenbergia filipes - is not the same plant as the sweetgrass used in the Native American tradition - Hierochloe odorata. A cause for some confusion. And I would disagree with the article's statement that the technique used in Gullah baskets is unusual. Coilng is a very widespread method of making basketry.
