Hello All. I am hoping someone might recognize this type of ceramic. It is 9 1/2" tall. One small spout, one smallish handle, 4 loops attached at the neck. The ceramic body appears to be earthenware. No markings on the flat base (or anywhere else). Green vitreous glaze on the outside. Peering inside with a flashlight, it looks like the interior was glazed with a brown glaze, but the potter missed one spot. It shows a cream colored body (although the body appears chocolate brown on exposed chips along the bottom rim).
It seems to be made with some skill. I particularly like the little "buttons" of clay applied at the attachment points for the spout and handle.
Any suggestions as to origin are welcome. the small loops attached on the neck remind me of martaban jar style of 15-16th century of ming dynasty, but the green was looks "newer" than the style, the base has really some ages,so maybe this is kind of old reproduction that inspired from the ming dynasty like what you found on ebay,19th century will be the right date of it,cheers!:cat:

Gorgeous, 2many. You can never have 2many of these, imo.
I immediately got a martaban jar association as well. Martabans were also manufactured later though, mine is an 18th century Canton/Guangdong dragonware Martaban.
Chinese potters are still making Martaban jars for the Borneo market, a trade that grew out of requests for repairs to highly valued antique Martaban jars.

The loops on this one would serve to secure a stopper with ropes. The glaze doesn't look 19th century imo, you can see it has much more sheen than the 19th century one on ebay. Like Martaban jars, yours was probably made in south China or an adjoining region in mainland SE Asia.
But even if it is 20th century, it is a beauty, and I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Comparisons of color and gloss are difficult with only photos online, given the vagaries of lighting and monitors. But it has occurred to me that the unglazed spot inside the jar should have some staining if was ever actually used (except just for water, perhaps?). I am leaning toward a more modern reproduction now. Still pretty, though.
