Late victorian (about 1890's - 1910's) quarter-sawn oak. I assume American (if you are in the US), though could be European with oak secondary wood in drawers. Where was it found (what country)? Any markings on back?

California USA I think it was made by R.J. Horner I spent days researching down to the detail of the carvings. I am 98% sure I just wanted some more opinions to be 100%

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Except for the fact that it's way too big for MY house, I love the light color and the GORGEOUS coloring!!!!!!!!!!! In looking at other Horner pieces online, I'm seeing VERY smooth and "FINISHED" looking pieces........now, maybe he wants the carving rough up on those lions or gargoyles.....I'm not sure......I just didn't see any other rough carving.....JMHO......please, someone correct me if I'm wrong!!!

Certainly of the quality of Horner but have a couple issues to reconcile before declaring this by Horner. Did Horner use oak as a secondary wood? More typical of English furniture. The stippled background carving usually also points to England as a source. I don't know the absolute answers to the questions posed above but think they need answered before an attribution can be made. I assume you have checked for marks, including on hardware? I also think you need to make sure you are comparing to known Horner works before declaring similarities. You may need an expert to make a final determination.

That was popular in USA as well, is it "green man" or "north wind"? I see both those terms used often and they mean the same thing but, i don't know which is correct. Popular late victorian figure in furniture for sure though.

Popular in most of the Western world during that period, just like other mythical beings.
The green man has more defined foliage, the north wind is supposed to be blowing, with full cheeks, usually out the sides of his mouth.:D One tends to morph into the other. In this case it is difficult to say, but I am inclined to say green man.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, two DIFFERENT men! Kinda like those "female heads" some say "jenny lind" & some say "lady liberty" Hard to keep track of all those Victorian dealios! They LOVED carving, that's for sure! Almost ANY excuse to carve the piece within an inch of it's life seems to be "that's what we are doing today, CARVING!" :singing:

I would guess @DeAnne sideboard would bring a good amount of money in the right location, New Orleans for example.

That would be nice. I also have a table that goes with it or should I say same style. The chairs don't match as far as I'm concerned, but the lady swears they were all bought at the same time and been in her family for over 100 years. She has an old appraisal on the set for $10,000. But I think we all know appraisals are not worth the paper they are written on except for insurance purposes.
