I bought a nice Blenko Glass 820 straight up decanter w stopper yesterday. It's in great shape (and it's purple) but there is the stuff on the inside that comes when you rinse out a bottle but put the stopper back before it has a chance to dry completely. Like running stripes down the inside toward the bottom.

Will a denture tablet clean this? Anything else? And I assume that when i put water in it, I have to put in some rubbing alcohol to get it to dry completely? Normally, I don't buy decanters with little tiny openings for this reason, but because it's purple it doesn't really show. But would like it to be as clean as possible.

Not posting a photo because my gear is all put away as we are expecting a dozen guests for a barbecue this weekend, but the problem is common enough that I'm sure most of you have seen it already.

    THANKS!

Will a Denture Tablet clean it? Probably not, Anything else, well, there are people who have machinery that will polish the inside of pieces that have been etched like that. (etched....water will etch glass) Sorry, but that's the way it is.

I had the exact same problem with the exact same decanter! I tried EVERYTHING (denture tabs,CLR,vinegar, etc, etc) and nothing worked. It was some weird stuff that seemed to come out of the glass,if that makes sense. I would treat it,it'd look great, then when it dried it was back. I finally gave up .

Ok, bummer! I guess that I'll place it in the mall and not ebay. It's a dark color so you have to hold it to the light to even see it. For the right price, people at the mall don't care as much as on liners do.

It's glass sickness. You could try limescale remover gel.

Although Blenko glass is more subject to etching then some, it may or may not be etched. Give cleaning a try. If the marks are up high, rice with soapy water might work. And yes alcohol in the final rinse will help it dry without marks

Hello ola402.....I have had good sucess in cleaning glass residue with DILUTED muriatic acid. However it is WICKED stuff and needs to to be handled with extreme caution and full protection of skin, eyes etc. Also needs to be done in well ventiated areas (outdoors is best) as the fumes are toxic.

Sounds interesting. PACKRAT. How long to you let the acid sit on the glass?

Won't rice expand and get sticky?

I've read everyone's posts, it's just that I've been busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest and haven't gotten back here. I've picked up the decanter a number of times, looked at the tiny neck, and set it back down. I'm afraid of making it worse. So I'll start with the just cleaning it route and if that doesn't work, it goes to the mall. Somehow I always thought the moisture condensation marks would be easier to remove, but I guess not. Still happy with the purchase though. TY!

    Hi Pam,
The rice will not get sticky unless it is cooked. HOWEVER when you are dumping it out do not rinse it down the drain. I had a horrible mess when I dumped it down and then poured hot water and forgot about it .

The rice method for cleaning glass showed up as the first item in the Quick Tip section of the new issue of Cook's Illustrated. As I read it I thought "Who doesn't know this?"

If they ever start calling the "tips section" Kitchen "Hacks" I'll cancel my subscription. ;)

If you attempt any kind of "acid" ~ be SURE that you add the acid to the water, and NOT vice-versa.

    This is chemistry 101.

Adding water to acid can literally backfire ~ IN YOUR FACE.
