Question on Wardrobe Steamer Trunk restoration

Steamer Trunk small.JPG I have an 1920's Wardrobe Steamer Trunk which I am currently restoring and upcycling. The interior was all nasty and ripped. Plus many parts were missing.
So I gutted it and decided to convert this into a mini-bar. I am basically remodeling the interior but I like to keep the outside as original as possible.
I already had to brush down the metal hardware on the outside (corner braces, hinges, locks...) since this hardware was encrusted in rust. Not just a bid patina.
The other parts don't look to bad. Some paint stains and lots of scratches. This trunk has seen its fair share of abuse.
What is the best way to restore the outside without destroying the patina too much?
Just a thorough clean (what to use?) and a coat of wax or polyurethane?

I would just go with a coat of paste wax. You could lacquer the metal parts to inhibit rust but would require a lot of masking so as not to get spray lacquer on the body of the trunk.

Thanks. I like the idea. I actually did already cover some metal parts with polyurethane some time ago to prevent further rust. I brushed it on. This will limit the masking. And then use a paste on the remaining sections.
