Wrong again I found out it is not a Stevens and Williams by looking at this pin.
140 NOT Stevens & Williams glass ideas | steven williams, glass, glass art (pinterest.co.uk)

So, I have been wanting a Stevens and Williams piece for the longest time, since I found a small Victorian vase and was introduced to applied flowers glass vases in the Victorian time. I thought I had scored a pair of small pitchers, but they ended up being Bohemian. I tried Fieldings Auctions, but the better stuff was beyond my price range and the other things weren't worth paying the postage.

Then I happened upon a garage sale online and spotted what I believe to be a Steven and Williams Matsu-no-ke* by Frederick Carder, which is also called a peachblow or peach blown vase. It is 10 inches tall. Cased glass with an amber ruffle and a peach color inside. Applied Flowers. It has no mark that I can see. It glows strongly in the dark under UV light.

*A design developed by Frederick Carder (1863-1963) and registered by Stevens & Williams of England in 1884. Its distinctive feature is the presence of applied and tooled sprays of blossoms influenced by Japanese designs. Source Corning Museum of Glass.

So, what do you think. Did I finally find my piece?

By the way, I have room for more.

    Yes. My concerns are:
    1. Reproduction of the style by other countries. This applied flowers, etc. is very hazardous territory. One seller says it and all the others follow the same description. I posted a Kralik piece the other day that the seller said may be Stevens and Williams or Kralik.
    2. I saw one with Stevens and Williams mark under the rim. Mine doesn't have a mark.
    3. I have already spent good money on a pair of pitchers represented to me as Stevens and Williams, and they weren't

I think you did quite well to find this "NOT" pin online.
You are a good researcher and sleuth.

Looked at the board, but there is no explanation why the items are not S&W, I can clearly see some are not, but some of the others look very much like S&W. I would want further clarification before writing yours off as not S&W.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have seen this piece repeatedly identified as Stevens and Williams over the years I have been searching for a piece that I could afford and obtain. Being on the West coast of the US doesn't give me any opportunity to find a piece in the wild at a better cost. I am also concerned that I may pay a lot for something that could be a copy. Since clearly this isn't an easy task. I do have a contact at Fielding auctions, I could ask. Though, I hate to keep pestering him and not buy something from them.

As usual you are phenomenal. I never thought of tracking a Pinterest author.

After I saw your post and was moping around I looked at her site, and clearly she knows her stuff. I looked at the price point for access, and am considering it.

What do you think of 20th Century Glass? They had some ebay sites with SW pieces - not associated with their own sales. See the bottom of this link. Stevens & Williams Glass Identification Guide | Glass Encyclopaedia (20thcenturyglass.com)

looking at the NOT S&W Pinterest page reminded me of Fran Yorke's candlewicklookalike site (she wrote a book on Candlewick but hosts the lookalike site for free. So I just clicked on Dilwyn's name and his face along with the link to the site came up; I agree that it seems to be good info.

I do use 20thcenturyglass quite a bit but don't know about who manages the site. My assumption of the links to eBay listings is they are likely just robot-scan recognition driven and any eBay listing including S&W is up for grabs; I doubt anyone is actually checking on the accuracy of each listing. BWDIK...

Don't be hard on yourself for a potentially problematic purchase. It's all part of the learning process and should be considered education investment; you still have a pretty piece of glass to enjoy. We have all made bad purchases thru the years; the longer you keep at it the fewer bad purchases you make, and in the end you're most likely ahead in the game...

I am fascinated by your thinking process and the vast range of your knowledge. Your resources are superb. I sometimes click on an item on Pinterest, but never on the person whose site it is. I just never thought of it, but it is clearly a useful idea.

I was wondering about this. Like Murano, so many label things Stevens and Williams, so I can't get an eyeball on what is real. 20thcenturyglass has a few things for sale but nothing I am interested in. I was amazed at the idea that they would confer a stamp of authenticity on an ebay site not of their own because they have an ebay and etsy site for their pieces. But I didn't think of computer generated but that made sense.

I am here to learn. I have made many bad purchases, and learn about them here or sometimes lately, before I put them on the forum. I appreciate your kind words about the learning process. I read you posts with great interest, and you are responsible for me making some astonishing great finds. I am ever so grateful. Every time I see a cake stand, I think of you and smile.

Okay. I paid the premium membership for one year on Dilwyn's site. I am going to work on learning how to spot the real thing. Wish me luck!
