Vintage Scottish Terrier dog novelty item... what is it?

Any ideas what this vintage Scottie dog holder would be used for? The dog can be lifted out (although perhaps was glued in at one time). Would it be for napkins?

Glad you like him. I think this was probably sold vrs being a school project, I've seen many, many vintage wooden hand carved Scotties similar, pins/brooches, napkin holders, sewing novelties, you name it. I also wondered if this could be intended for wooden spools of thread....

Since you asked about the base, it is kind of interesting. Nothing written related to the piece but over the leather is the remnants of a baseball score card or newspaper article. I'm sure there was some family story with it.

Hi! That is an interesting tidbit attached there!
Scotties were so popular during Roosevelt's term and some of the school ones I have are Scotties.
I can see using it for thread. Do the wooden spools fit on those? They look too thick for standard spools. Maybe the larger ones for production machines?

Interesting about the baseball, thanks Yourturn. Maybe the former owner's team won a game and they cut a newspaper article out and glued it to the base. I don't think it adds value (hopefully doesn't subtract).

Letters is a good suggestion.

Maybe there is a baseball/scottie lover out there! A cross collectible, lol? Too bad the paper is so worn. The photo I posted is a close up, in the hand it is almost impossible to read without a magnifying glass.

I'll mention it in the auction, either way.
