What Is This Thing: A Grain Thief, For Sack-Sampling?

8 3/4" long, 15/16" large-end opening, 5 3/4 ounces, including the lead filling in the pointy end.
In my fantasy I picture stuffing this into the side of a sack of grain or corn with the inner throat down, then turning it 180 degrees so the grain gravity-flows through the cone...into a bucket?
I dunno; as I said, it's a fantasy an' that's as far as I can take it.
Seems like, for one thing, it would leave an unhealed hole inna sack. Then, why the (apparently solid) iron ring at the big end?
Grateful I'll be for some enlightenment, here. Thanks for lookin'!

I would go along with your idea as a seed sampler.

the hole would close because of the weave.....kinda like a coffee bag...

and some are indeed open ended..

I thought a spile was for liquids...like in kegs or barrels.

If you drove that like a nail into a tree, sap would run into the opening and out the other end. That lip on the end would let you hang a bucket.

A word from years ago, when I was reading Dorothy Canfield Fisher. Haven't had an occasion to use it since. :)

Seems too flimsy to be pounding it into a tree.

I've never done it. Maybe they drill a pilot hole first.

    ********

YouTube shows people drilling holes first.

@Rayo56 : Got no sugar maples on your property?
