Just wondering if anyone can pin an approximate date down for this brooch. Think its wooden and was probably rather beautiful in its day with inlaid gold and silver. Sadly now a very damaged learning tool for me!
Also the little plaque that seems to be maybe gold leaf or similar. Not inlaid metal but the edges look too clean to be paint?. On a piece of base metal.
    Thanks for any information
    :)

    Very magnetic.
Having googled Damascene I think you are right. I’ve come across the term before and have had a few pieces that I’ve not liked and moved on but this is such a different quality I didn’t think it could be the same thing!

Could be, I didn’t think of that. It looks very like wood and is very hard but I’ve not handled antique papier-mâché to compare.
    Off to google again!
    Thanks Hollyblue :)

I remembered the term for the inlay"pique". Used with paper mache, tortoise shell, bovine horn and probably other materials.

Having googled I'm now wondering if it's Bog oak as with a good loupe I can see grain.

Bog 'oak' (the wood is not necessarily oak) was my first thought on the brooch.

Late is very fashionable. Wait until the rush has subsided and then make a dramatic entrance:smuggrin:

That's what I was wondering; this sort of looks like a kind of horn.

I always need some time for that extra bit of drama.
