Anyone know what this was used for? Writing on it says presented by b'nai israel anse ungavi? To the ladies of peace nov. 3 1901.
Looks like it was used a lot - YIKES! ????? https://www.osungusa.com/collections/mallet/bone-crusher-mallet
I think I IDd the congregation - it's "B'nai Israel Anshe Ungarn" (Sons of Israel, people of Hungary) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Ungarn being the Yiddish name for Hungary. The congregants, naturally, were Jewish immigrants from Hungary. The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle refers to the Ladies of Peace but I don't have access so I don't know anything else. And, of course, it's a ceremonial mallet, usually awarded upon the dedication of a building, the foundation of a society, etc.
Also the German name for Hungary, to no one's surprise. It could also be given as a gift to a former leader of the group; they often were given to retiring committee leaders. (see: gavel)
