How unusual is this to have a split ring on a necklace marked Czechoslovak?
Also some other unreadable letters. Does this date it at all?
No idea if the material, maybe glass? (Gemtester arriving tomorrow!)
    Thanks

I've seen them before, but it's not as common as the clasp being marked. Odds are it's glass. Some garnets look black if they're big enough, and tourmaline comes in black, but these look like glass.

Thankyou. What sort of date are you thinking?. They are completely opaque. Light doesn't shine through them at all.

Good question. How long is it?

They don't look like glass to me.

    That is all I have.

When something says 'Czech', I automatically think glass, but I can't make that out here & the way it is strung looks like inexpensive 'ethnic' looking necklaces I have seen that are made in China. Without being able to handle, I'm seeing wood/nuts/seeds. Heavy or light in the hand?

It's heavy and chinks like glass but it's very matt black, not shiny at all.
I just assumed with the Czech link it was most likely glass.

Same here. It's not bakelite with those flat spots. If not glass, I really don't know. That length makes me think it's newer than I'd thought, but the clasp says earlier. So... still dunno. The clasp says 50s but the length says late 60s.

Not unusual to find the 'Czech' mark on the jump ring, and the mark generally indicates pre 1940s dating (no earlier than 1918) - they look like matte black glass (French jet) to me ...

@KSW if you clink them on your teeth and you declare them glass, then I will believe it.

It really is the definitive test for me.

Well, there's another test, but it involves a hammer.

Thanks Jivvy, I've now got to clean coffee off the keyboard :hilarious::hilarious:.
I'm pretty sure they are glass and although they aren't special, Cheryl's comment above is the most logical conclusion of slightly elderly French jet aka boring black glass!.
I've learned about split rings that I didn't know about- Thankyou @DragonflyWink

There used to be a member on one of the eboo boards who loved testing Bakelite beads by sacrificing one to smash or cut up :wideyed:

It reminds me of that late 19th century black glass called onyx glass. Some was matte, some was shiny.
I have a few pairs of French matte onyx glass sleeper earrings, no doubt the Bohemians/Czechs made onyx glass as well. They kept making older fashions until Art Deco set in full blast.;)

Googled and I think this is exactly what it is. Who needs a hammer when we have AJ.!
