Carved wood tankard, with brass insert.

    Any ideas on this old wood tankard? It measures 3 5/8" top opening diameter x 5 3/8" deep, it stands 8 1/2" tall and measures 5 1/2" at its widest diameter. I believe that the inside was tin coated. Also note the 3 rosette touch marks on the bottom.
    What type of wood? I would think that Germany (black forest), France (wine) Austria, would be possibilities.

    No...but apparently, just getting home, I was a bit frazzled by traffic and read 'wool tankard'................................twice... ;)

    I would think Germany or Austria are good possibilities.

    Isn't a tankard for drinking? This looks like it has a pour spout. Pitcher?

    I agree with pitcher. I originally wrote pitcher, then I changed it to tankard.

    Don't see much tin in India. I'd suspect Malaysia area.

    BTW the symbol stamped on the bottom is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. The actual wheel this stamp emulates has 24 spokes. The abacus/wheel is described here: http://www.isamaj.com/indinfo/facts1.htm

    The pitcher in the second link in the listing that Cluttered showed looks closest to yours.....total pricing's not bad either!
