    Hi folks

a couple of things i picked up at the recycle center today.

the Rosewood ( i think) carving is one of those bone teeth eyes type, i've had ones like it before, but this one seems a bit better,

the pencil sketch the guy let me have as the frame had smashed and the cardboard backing were mangled, so has been cut off at the paper size, with board retained at the back as have some info

i think its reads J Marlee, but unsure, 1822 ?

    any info or comments appreciated

Imagine walking thru London in the 1820's-how many Shakespearean landmarks were still extant pre- Blitz & urban-renewal ?

yeah these type never usually sell very well, but are interesting for people if you can find an area etc

looking at the pics again i think it says 7 church st, which is probably a very common street name for britain

Possible-Really tough to say given 'artistic license' and such. The house looks similar but the room build's different,it is damn reminiscent though.
PS-Any way at all to identify the folks clothing- Dutch,Welsh,Irish,German, etc. ?

I reckon it reads J Marks and 1922. That sketching style is much more twentieth century than nineteenth as is the handwriting.

    Rhys something.

    I read 1882.
    A charming sketch.:)
Conwy Castle is a castle and has a round tower. Yours is a church with a square tower.;)

Is the Chinese carving missing part of the left thumb?

I see J. Marke which looks either German or Dutch. That really looks like a Gothic church tower to me, not a castle. The clothing looks continental as well. It could be Belgian. The Eastern part of Belgium borders the Netherlands and Germany.

Marke is not a Dutch surname.
In the Low Countries a 'marke' was a border, and as such it can be found as (part of) a place name if a town or village was situated near a border. Those borders may be gone now, but the names remain.

In Medieval times 'marke' was also the name given to an organisation of independent farmers who worked together in every way necessary. This 'marke' also continues in place names, especially in the east of the Netherlands.

To me it reads as J. Martre.
    Ditto.
I think it is period clothing.

Very interesting-Workers 'Communes','Unions' or 'Mondragon Corporations' (Basque Spain) cooperatives is a ancient concept.
DITTO-Square Church and prob later 19th century, seems a bit spontaneous for early 19th century.

We have a friend in Belgium whose last name is Marke so I erroneously assumed it was Dutch. Could be German, then.

Could be. There are a lot of German and French names in the Low Countries.
