Once again again, I appeal to your sharp eyes for suggestions as to the signature here.

This one may be in @verybrad 's area--both geographically and knowledge-wise.

The note on the back may indicate an amateur / Sunday painter (?); dated 1939; 12" x 16"; found in a thrift store in Portland Oregon.

    Thank you all!

Last name looks like Shawe. First initial is M., but I can't make sense of the G name.

About all I can say is that I think the artist to be talented and that I like it. I am not having any luck with the signature. Besides Shawe, I thought maybe Shane. There is an Illinois artist database but I can not seem to be able to access the alphabetical files for S. Here it is if anyone else can have better luck. Primary list is under the Artist Timelines link.

Its lovely. They had talent for sure. Can you try to get a clear pic of the signature ? Maybe turn your flash on.

Thank you for the comments and suggestions. I'll search that Illinois database and see what I can find.

And I'll take another pic or two when I get home this afternoon and post them.

I really like this piece and would hang it myself. A lovely plein air sketch.

What a mystery. The G name looks like Greicyz to me but the only thing that brings up is the meaning "Happy". Two last names might indicate married woman. The note reads like something the artist wrote to themselves...no need to say who it's by, but a memory of who is was done with or under the instruction of. I'm interested in the pencil scribble too, in that case. Spring Sun(day)??

Here's a new batch of photo, taken in actual sunlight (what?!? It's not raining in the Pacific Northwest?!).

    Thank you for the help!

    Spring Sunset. Suspect that's a woman's hand.
