leather covered wood box

Hi folks

anyone have an idea what this old leather covered wood box was supposed to hold or contain, has a little hole in the metal that goes through (for air?)

measures 3 1/2 inches

2 7/8 diameter

2 1/4 inches internal diameter

the top is just where the leather has crackled

any thoughts appreciated

 

off the cuff , personal tobacco holder....

thank for the thoughts guys, didn't think about tobacco. could have been for carrying pipe tobacco then thinking down that line

 

It’s missing a smaller central section, also round. That held a tiny measure glass. A larger one then went upside down. If that makes sense. I’ll see if I can find an image.

Apothecary or medicine set, yes, and the ones I’ve had were late nineteenth or early twentieth.

& those look lined....... is yours lined?

 

yeah does, just different materials, or age
mine is a wood base or maybe papier mache covered in leather

looking inside mine does appear to have a dark lining as well

OBB's my London Star (& most things UK). Now all She has to do is get Us Brit citizenship !
PS-Will tell ya,as a country/burb Yank,we found London crazy comfy. Tube's & busses a cinch there.
