Featured Silver ankle bracelet from Madura, Indonesia

A very heavy 19th century solid silver woman's ankle bracelet from Madura, Indonesia. It was once one of a pair, but you can rarely find pairs nowadays.
When worn as a pair a woman would have had to have very strong leg muscles. I suppose it is one way to get shapely legs.

This model is quite unusual, most Madurese ankle bracelets are stylised double-headed snakes, with the ends flattened and decorated.

Would the wearer sort of pry it open to get it on the foot or somehow slip the foot in?

They would slip the foot in. It is rigid, solid silver, no movement whatsoever.
Madurese are tall by Indonesian standards, but still smaller than most Westerners.

I can't get my heel through it, and I have small feet. So yes, very small for something that goes on the ankle.

They had jewellery everywhere. They also wore their sarongs folded shorter than the Javanese, so the ankles would show and deserved their own bling.

 

It is possible, although this model wouldn't be comfortable to wear during sleep. But I think a woman's foot that is smaller than mine could slip through it.
