Another item from the same miscellaneous box as the totem pole. The beads are old styles, very tiny and older colors. The leather on the tassels is brain tanned. The braided yellow portion forms a loop 23" long (64" total length), so if it was hung around a neck it would hang past your waist. The multi colored section at the bottom is 12 1/2" long. The leather of the bottom tassel has a slot cut into it, as if it was meant to connect with something else. I can only see a small amount of the threads used. Some is clearly commercial, fine spun cotton or linen. A small bit is stiff enough that it might be sinew.

I am assuming it is Native American, but I have not seen an object like this before. Any ideas? Thanks.

The leather doesn't seem right for South Africa, but I will keep that suggestion in mind. Thank you.
