I still don't know for sure but soon that might change, the Youtube videos I've posted are from Christopher Clarke Antiques He is the authority on campaign chests https://campaignfurniture.com/ yesterday I helped him with a identification of a Anglo-Indian box and cheekily asked him if he would return the favour with this chest. You never know, he may come back with fake, Asian, 1970's. I have seen a lot in the last 5 years and could this be a fake? Yes, of course it could be, if I had the locks and timber and a lot of time I think I could remake this but it wouldn't be economically viable to do so for what I paid.
I will post his response if I get it.
Yes things shouldn't have been said, I need to learn to let things go.

I have had a reply from Christopher Clarke Antiques. I had said in my email "I didn't pay campaign chest money so if it's new, fake or a conversion then please feel free to say"

"your chest is a little confusing and this is probably because it has been through a workshop at some stage.

The fitting of the brass straps and handles look awkward but this may be due to them being removed to re-polish the chest and then refitted.

The dovetails and drawer lining etc. look English and period. A one piece, 3 drawer chest is a little unusual but we have seen others before. The over hanging top board looks a little awkward, but again, we have seen others before.

I'm guessing that the holes to take the replaced, removable feet are threaded ?

So, in summary, I would say its period but has probably been through a workshop which hasn't helped it."

I have asked what date "period" is, I hope to get a reply but I'm pushing my luck and would fully understand if one email was enough to repay the favour.

Many pieces are a testimony of their living through history. Yours seems to be. It was appreciated enough for a previous owner to send it to a workshop to do work on it.

It's a pity they didn't send it to a good workshop :( lol

Yes, it is. Maybe the good one was too far away. Besides, "the one in the village is such a nice fellow".;)

After doing restorations for a while I suspect this was an amateur job, personally I think it's dark location and old camera that makes it look so bad. I honestly think if you were looking at it in the flesh you wouldn't think it was the same chest. Mahogany wood reflects the light and ebony looks red or brown in photos when using a flash. I know not to take photos of ebony inside but there's nothing I can do with the chest, I'm not lugging it down the stairs just to take photos.
