Featured Mata Ortiz, San Ildefonso, or Other?

    Howdy.

Recent acquisition that I am not sure about. Burnished black pot with slip decoration, similar to San Ildefonso work. Relatively thin walled (not thick like Santa Clara, but not as thin as modern Mata Ortiz). About 4 1/2" high, 7" across.

The signature is lightly incised, and not one I can find in lists of Pueblo artists. I seem to remember someone here saying Mata Ortiz signatures are usually incised as opposed to Pueblo signatures applied with slip/pencil. Thoughts? Thanks.

If it has a rounded, rather than flat bottom, it's Mata Ortiz. The incised signature is also unique to Mata Ortiz pottery, and not found on similar Native American pots.

Some potters from Mata Ortiz were "influenced" by the pottery of Maria Martinez, and produced copies of her "feather" patterns, which explains the San Ildefonso connection.

It appears that the "signature" has been changed, or rewritten over. It doesn't correspond to any known Mata Ortiz potter, but may have been applied over a potter whose last name ended with an "a," (still visible next to the smudge.) But the pot itself, is definitely Mata Ortiz, and not Native American.
