Featured Identifying old hall stand

My mum is trying to sell her old wooden hall stand, but she has no idea what country it's from, what time period and, therefore, no idea what price to sell it for. She's also not sure what type of wood it is. Any ideas where/when it may have come from and how much it'd be worth?

I think it's beautiful but really can't give you any other clue except to guess it's US made.

Looks like walnut. Looks like mirrors or something were in the odd-shaped openings in upper part right and left. Could be missing panels in lower section, not sure but it seems a bit empty when elsewhere on the piece the maker put so much elaborate decoration.

 

I thought there may have been mirrors there too though there doesn't seem to be a channel for them and the vertical edges are finished nicely.
It is possible they were fit flush to those edges and behind the fretwork.
Can we see the back Jake?
Any marks/labels anywhere? In or around the drawer maybe?

Speaking of Brad - I watched his ideal Christmas gift on AR last night (3rd or 4th time). 'Twas a large set of books, with samples of the woods of the US. Not pictures, actual pieces of wood.

I take some of that back. I just looked at about 100 walnut hall stands via Mr. Google and saw that more often than not the two wing sections were empty, as were lower right and left. I'm guessing they could be ordered with varying levels of mirrors or carved/inlaid panels depending on how much you were willing to pay.

Mirrors weren't cheap 'back then' due to silvering...and glass for that matter, Correct?

 

That is one lovely piece, Jake! When you say your mum doesn't know what country it's from, can we know where it is now or how she acquired it? You haven't listed a location in your profile.

 

It's beautiful! And it looks very nicely restored/refinished, OR EXTREMELY well kept! I agree as well the wood looks to be walnut, from the picture....

 

Agree with the 1880 date or just a bit later (1890). Also agree with the Eastlake styling. Does not look like walnut to me. It is too light in color. Knowing the wood will probably depend on origin. If US, birch or, possibly, cherry. If UK or Europe, probably beech or some kind of fruitwood. I also see a distinct possibility that this is Anglo-Indian. In that case, hard saying what the wood would be.

 

The rear vertical pieces look like oak grain to me.

 

Anything interesting about the little drawer? Marks underneath, or a close look at the metal? Not a lock, right? I don't know much about furniture... just curious. Very pretty!

I just woke up! Haha. I live in Australia so communication between us is going to be somewhat... delayed. Anyway, the hall stand was purchased here in Melbourne. The shop owner couldn't tell my mum much about the item, other than the fact it was over 100 years old. She doesn't seem to believe it is an Australian piece - we do import a lot of European/American furniture here (as do many countries I suppose), so that might very well be the case. I've taken everything out the drawer and inspected both the drawer and surrounding area closely, but I can't see any engravings, etc. (just a few blemishes and cracks we hadn't noticed before). The metal is not a lock, and the two brass bowls at the bottom are not original, but made by my grandfather. It also looks like it has been touched up quite a bit in other areas (new vanish, etc.). I will upload a few more photos very shortly.
