Picked this up from the guy who liked to smash ornaments this morning. Amazed it's in one piece. A few sites attributing it to Minton although I've never come across this back stamp by them before. An impressed 'No. 16'

Aha. Some guy on the market who does house clearances. He seems to sell at low prices to drive high volumes of sales when it comes to bric a brac. As a consequence some lovely items get destroyed.

I would give Mr Smasher my telephone number with instructions to call me before any further smashing takes place. At least you might get a crack at a few good pieces. No pun intended.

Sold the jug last week and got this back today

"Good afternoon, thank you for sending the jug - it was quick delivery and very well packed. Sadly, it has been heavily restored with spray glaze to disguise cracks across the base and up both sides. I appreciate you may not have been aware of this but I have been dealing in relief moulded jugs for 40 years and can easily see such faults. Out of courtesy, I have contacted you directly for your comments prior to informing eBay. For your info, I attached two photos. Many thanks,"

Now that explains the amazing condition of it. Deep sigh.

Damn & Triple Damn Chinois ! Still, the fellow seems civil about the whole thing (so far ?).
    Two thoughts-
    1. Would've been nice,as a 40 year Minton Vet,if he could've seen these flaws in the pics before bidding,BUT-there's a fair amount of diff btw in- person examination and photos.
    2. He states-''Out of courtesy, I have contacted you directly for your comments prior to informing eBay.'' I guess this means it could still be a 'positive feedback' situation pending settlement of claim ?
40 years ago on Ebay we'd sometimes handle these matters privately-course things have changed.

how come your photo is flat , and his is shiny ?
I can see the line under the 12 on your shot , so how come Mr 40 years ... didn't..
what type of spray glaze doesn't't affect the depth and clarity of the impressed numbers..?

He don't want it no more...so I guess that's that..

You can clearly see the line across the base in the listing. I didn't notice it as I am naive. If he has the experience though I agree he should have noticed it in the listing. Maybe fishing for a freeby? My options were limited. I've refunded anyway and told him to keep it. My options were limited and I doubt I would get much for a cut and shut jug. I resisted My usual sarcastic rhetoric as I already have one -ve feedback this month from saying my true thoughts.

With eBay you have to swallow a lot sometimes, because their feedback system is bizarre.

Obviously a 40 year unimpeachable expert could've spotted this a mile away-'easily' as he stated. Why they purchased it's the true mystery.
It least it wasn't a 1K piece and you've learned a bit about ceramic repairs.

Yes the jug was supposed to be £5 and he threw it in my basket for nothing. So it cost me £5.50 in postage.

They may well be among us. They have left +be feedback now so I can call them what I like. I'll leave it at that though.

    Win/Win Mate ! There's a fair amount of straight-shooters on Ebay, Buyers & Sellers.
All you can do is be as honest & thorough as humanly possible-document any flaws or puzzling areas.
PS-Our Potties & Glassies here have forgotten more than I'll ever know, and can give you all the repair detection tricks.
