Hi again, sarah! This one is a measure, not just a tankard.

Where on the piece does that crossed key punch appear? It does not seem to be the punch just below the 330 and above the 1/2 pint - can we see a close up of that one too?

Why did you mention "No James Yates stamp?" Who is that?

The crowned X may be a Dutch "pseudo mark." Let's see if our resident expert in all things Dutch (although not necessarily pewter) has anything to share. @Any Jewelry

You're right, as far as Dutch tin goes my knowledge does not extend much further than the rose mark and the angel mark.:playful: But I agree, the Netherlands does have a crowned X mark as well.

You could ask here, scroll down the page to find the info in English:

Maybe it helps that upside down crossed keys are in the crest of the Dutch town of Leiden? In which case the keys mark should be the other way around, making the cartouche look like a crest.

It isn't a measure and wouldn't have been used as one - by which I mean it would not have been used to dispense a quantity, you'd have drunk from it. Our tankards designed for use in pubs were and are very strictly regulated. These tankards were basically certified to hold the precise amount of ale specified. (You then argue about whether it includes the head!)

The crowned X is a British quality mark and this is certainly one of ours, especially as it says 1/2 pint.

James Yates was a very well known maker. I'm not sure whose mark this is, but have a trawl here: http://www.pewterbank.com/html/mug_-_measure_marks.html

Thanks, Owned. In the early going I was curious about all the numbers around the rim (more apparently that I could actually make out) and with the other numbers and punch near the 1/2 pint I started to think measure.

What is the significance of all those numbers?

I looked through some of the pewterbank link and saw any entry for James Yates but am not sure whether the additional touchmarks in the picture are part of his official mark or have other meanings. Need more coffee and some breakfast before going further. Still very dark out. ;)
