When I bought it, I thought it was pewter, but it turned out to have the Zilpla 90 mark. I know, still not a huge find, but I like the charm of it, as it's small (approx. 4.75") with a nice decoration.
Wondering how old this is, what that mark next to 'ZILPLA 90' is (looks like an animal), and if the image is based on a painting.

Found this one https://www.curiosadevlinder.com/en...ver-plate-spiegeltje-voor-handtas-deens/92085 with the same image, but it's marked on the front (with the mark animal being described as a shark), and also marked with 'Denmark'. No useful info regarding the origin of the image.

A Baroque genre painting. Jan Steen's 'The Quack.' Between c. 1666 and c. 1688. In the Rijksmuseum.

The Zipla 90 mark is likely silver plate.

I've seen a few items being sold as Dutch, and as most have a Dutch scene like this one, I also assumed Zilpla would be dutch. So I was surprised to see that Denmark mark on the link version.

Bears the whale/shark mark of Danish silverplate manufacturer Hans Jensen, their wares will often bear importer or retailer marks, the 'ZILPLA 90' would, as already suggested, indicate the Dutch market. I was told years ago 'zilpla' was an abbreviation for 'zilverplaat'...

    :)
And in this case, the quack was yours truly ... But instead of snake oil, I used silver polish as cure :D

Marote referred to the title of the painting by Jan Steen.;) These items usually have scenes from well known Dutch paintings on them, and often ones by Jan Steen.

    I know :)
My neighbour has vines that grow over the fence to my side, so now I have to wait for the grapes to ripen to put the scissors to good use :)
