Hi all, my great grandfather bought this chair around 1900 and it has been in our family since. It’s in great shape considering the age. Original leather, minimal marks on the wood. But I can’t find the marking/label/sticker to show it is indeed Stickley. Does anyone here have any old catalogs that might show this chair? My mom says it reclines too. Thanks in advance for any help. Curious as to value, assuming it is indeed Stickley.

Hello @MMB & welcome to the forum!!:happy:

If you would go back to your photos & choose the full-size option, it would make it easier for our members to view your chair.

Also, if the pads are removable, a couple of photos of the frame itself. If the pads are not removable, a couple of photos of the bottom would be good.

Meanwhile, I am going to tag a couple of our members who are more knowledgeable about furniture.

I can't say if it's Stickley or not, but I looked closely at the side view, and it does appear that the angle of the back is adjustable.

Disclaimer: I am not a furniture expert, but I'm weighing in with my amateur opinion to see how it measures up with the experts, when they make their comments. :)
To me, it looks a bit clunky for Stickley and I don't see the joinery. It's certainly Stickley in style, but it may be an imitator. Construction photos will help, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Very nice chair. If it helps, the model is called a Morris chair, designed by or for William Morris.
Originally English, it was made by several companies in other countries as well.
Yes, the back should be able to recline.

Correction, the Morris chair was designed by Ephraim Colman, but adapted by William Morris' company:

It says Stickley was one of the firms that made it in the US. I don't know if yours is indeed by Stickley.

It does not appear to be Stickley to me. It is a nice mission style morris chair in a mahogany finish. Gustav Stickley worked almost exclusively in oak, though a very few pieces were made in mahogany. I am not sure about the other Stickley brothers' use of mahogany. Your chair may actually be mahogany finish on some other wood, rather than true mahogany. Hard to tell from these pictures. Without a label or marking, it will be difficult to attribute this.

That's what I was thinking. It might not might not have been made by that company, but it's in the same style.

Looks too dark and opaque for fuming to me. And those bright wear edges on the arms look like what happens with dark stain on light wood.

I swear I answered this yesterday

Doesn't look like it to me for the reasons Jeff states above. Besides, even dark fumed oak will show the grain.

Thank you for the feedback. I took more photos…and found one label. Assuming this will all confirm it is not true Stickley but interested to hear other thoughts. You all are clearly the experts!

Shop of the Crafters is a step down from Stickley but still a good name. Would be better in oak.

Having a problem in finding a good comparable. Here is a Shop of the Crafters morris chair in oak. Think this a more desirable model than yours, with the exposed tenons and nice elongated corbels. That plus, yours being in mahogany, would make this value of $450.00 higher than what you might expect if selling. If looking for an insurance value, that might be OK.
