    G'Day, Mates!
I thought of posting this in Tribal...but in spite of it obviously being influenced by NW art, it probably has no direct tribal affiliation...save perhaps by bloodline in the artisan. It is unsigned, unmarked.

12" X 48" X 1 3/4" was the raw plank; it's been cut to ~5/8", shown at the borders an' uniformly throughout the panel...that's ~1 1/8" of relief. It's been in the weather awhile, so is bone dry, an' very slightly cupped into the face along its length. The face has been stained black, which has suffered fading. It looks to me like OG western Red Cedar, bicbw.

I can't detect any theme or recognizable pattern in the carving...but hope some of you may see in it what I cannot.
All your comments are welcome...Thanks for lookin'!

Really nice piece Whit-Possibly Mid-Cent (Pacific Northwest ?) Brutalist sculpture or a furniture element. Is there any evidence of it ever having been hung (hanged) ?
PS-Best get rid of it by sending it to me before you find it's full of carpenter ants or termites-who needs the headache !

Yes...at the very top of the plank, dead center, is a single hole (pics 2 & 4). It's why I oriented it as I did, vs "upside down".
Nothing in the carving gave me a clue about orientation.

Cool piece, whit. I can see why you get a NWC vibe, but agree that it doesn't actually demonstrate those traditions.

12" wide, and without any knots does indicate a mature tree, though it doesn't have to be 'old growth' to attain that. Looks like cedar to me too; if you were to get it slightly wet, and take a pic straight on, it may be easier to tell. It should smell like cedar too.

I don't see any particular NW Coast native influence - but does look like cedar; scratch or sniff test should tell.
Interesting abstract carving though. The forked element at upper left in the first pics is more precise than most of the other elements, and I keep trying to have it remind me of something - a root? claw? hand? but not getting anything specific.

I live in the PNW and I don't see anything particularly First Nations style about it, although I could be mistaken. Interesting design though.
