Hi new here on this forum... I am always looking for violins , but at a recent auction viewing I ran across these old books... are they of any significant value?

1-Lectures on the Rise and Development of Medieval Architecture
    by Sir Gilbert Scott 1879
2-Christian Iconography by M. Didron, 1861 signed by JSK Cutts
3-The Anatomy of Plants with an idea of a Philosophical History of Plants, Lectures read before the Royal Society, by Nehemiah Grew MD 1682. This is signed inside by J.P. Cutts 1824
4-The Archeology of the Christian Altar by Major Alfred Heales 1881. this book contains a personal note from the author to Dr Cutts

These books are not in great shape but appear to be all there.

Just curious... auction closes wed... cheers, Mat

Who is Dr. Cutts? And I don't know about value, but all four seem like very interesting reading!

The Anatomy of Plants with an idea of a Philosophical History of Plants, Lectures read before the Royal Society, by Nehemiah Grew MD 1682.

I'd say only that has any potential, the others are relatuvely recent as old books go.

I'm not an expert :D. But I was also drawn to the book about plants, which according to a google search contains quite a number of illustrations.

Hola, and welcome to the Forums, Mat!
Violins? If you find the time at some point, I for one would love to hear about your collection, maybe with a few pictures showing what you look for, and what you've found, please!

Others in the group are into the sax along with the violins. (sorry, never could resist a bad joke - not that I try too hard) If any of the books are heavily illustrated or have nice color plates, they're worth something just for the images. Books on plants always do well. They may not be immensely valuable, but there's always a gardener out there or someone who needs a gift for one. I did a quick ABE search on the plant book, and depending on condition I'd say go bid on it.

I do hate to see books parted out... :(
Yes...I know there are trillions of them.

I especially hate to see the Jardine Naturalist's Library volumes parted out into little octavo prints. But the money speaks. For the parrots volume, for instance, I bought a nice copy for 300US. If I wanted to break it up, and take my time selling the 30 prints, I could probably get 700. Woops! Maybe that was a RANT.

Part of it depends on the condition of the book. If it's already damaged or has parts missing, breaking it up hurts a lot less. If it's in good shape, cutting it is almost criminal.
