A lot of similar vessels are being sold as Pre-Columbian / Inca / Chimú, but based on the condition (of mine, and of most of the online versions), I would assume they are repros.
Any way of telling how old these items are?

In the early 70's no well-equipped boudoir would be caught dead without a bottle of Kama Sutra Oil and a copy of-

The textures on the bottom of each vessel look a bit odd. But without provenience or a thermoluminescence test it can be difficult to be certain. Contemporary Peruvian potters can use the same methods and materials as their ancestors, and are familiar with the particular styles that sell well.

Both are modern, 1970s at the earliest imo.
The first seems to have been made in the style of a Mochica pot, but blackened in Chimú style. Confusingly it looks like there is some Mexican influence.
The second is a replica of a classic Chimú pot.

Both Mochica and Chimú are Moche cultures, Chimú came after Mochica.
The flat bases and lack of artistry/detail are a giveaway. That said, there is a market for replicas of pre-Columbian art.

Oh wow ! I hadnt thought of that book in decades. There was a VERY tattered copy that made the rounds amongst all the teenage boys in my neighborhood.

Good to know this :) And indeed (to my surprise), the prices for the replicas that have been sold on ebay aren't bad at all.
And asking prices of the ones that are still available, are even better. Would be great if they sell for those prices (but I doubt it).
Today I checked a few of the similar items, that are listed on Ebay as Pre-Columbian.
While the title only says that it's Pre-Columbian/Chimú/Mochica, in the description some of the sellers do mention it's "in the style of"/"a replica"/ "a repro"

They should mention it in the title as well.
