On my travels in Oxford for a few days. Only made one purchase today. A water colour signed by the above. He moved to Oxford in 1927. The subject is Wenlock Abbey and it's ~45cm long.

It was reduced from £15 to £7.50 so it seems there wasn't much interest. Maybe a reflection on the foxing.

    That's pretty!
Curious... where in Oxford did you find it? I was there for ten days in July and found nothing of interest in the local charity shops.

I found it a couple of miles north of the centre in a shop called Helen and Douglas House. There is a small cluster of shops there. I also found another small cluster in Rose hill a couple of miles south of the centre. Another Helen and Douglas House which is more like a super store. There is one called Orinoco which is loaded with stuff. It had closed by the time I got there though. Looks like I missed a few. Google maps doesn't seem to show them when I am searching. Maybe it is sulking because I have turned Google services off.

Light in Wetherspoons wasn't great. No there isn't much but it's there. Can't think why else people would pass up on it in such an affluent city. Especially with the local interest. I think it needs reframing too with a decent mount. I'll have to see what I've got at home.

Nice piece for an absurdly decent price-weird to think there'd be that many 'Art' cretins in that area with two small, but world-class museums in town (?).
Picking is a quite odd business.
PS-Most illogical, it's a well executed realistic watercolor w/ some age to it.Who living nearby in an old or faux half-timbered manse wouldn't snap it up ? Nothing at all off-putting about it.

You sound quite bitter about the whole Oxford experience.

That was done by someone with skills. How it was passed over I haven't a clue.

Not at all-We loved Oxford. The layout of the town, university were as close as walking into a Tolkien/Harry Potter environment as We could've imagined.I'm just surprised that such an accomplished piece of art would've bad to have been marked down to 7 1/2 before it was bought.

Okay misread that. I was a bit unsure at first but after some schlepping about I've seen some wonderful scenery as far as cities go. The walk down the Thames to the south end of the city was lovely. Even the city centre has lots of little pockets of green and flowing water. Nice vibe. Everyone I've told that I'm going to Oxford for a break has said 'Wot?'
Seems we are all expected to go and lie on a beach with our eyes closed for two weeks. Pripyat appeals to me too but there aren't any charity stores there as far as I know.

Maybe they thought it was a print. A very fine piece though. I love his attention to detail and his color choices.

Yes, quite a striking town.We stayed in a tiny cottage next to the old Turf Tavern adjacent to the old city wall-it was enchanting. The covered market was great. I was also struck by the age of some of the towns structures-St George's Tower at Oxford Castle,circa1020 AD, and the Saxon Tower of St. Michael at the North Gate (1040).
    Also-The Ashmolean Museum,Pitt Rivers Museum,Bodleian Library.

The detail struck me too. The patches of colour he used are much smaller than you usually see on water colours. He seems to have painted each individual stone in the building walls.

I'll have a look. I'm going to have a look at the market this morning then off to Banbury for more charity shop indulgence and a walk in the countryside.

Forecast was awful for the week but so far so good. Sun is still shining here. Supposed to be raining this afternoon so I'm getting the walk in early. Mainly light rain with a bit of a storm in the middle. There is a wine festival advertised in Oxford today which is tempting. More tea vicar?
