    Hello,
Does anyone know who could be the maker of this brooch and how old it is?
It is about 1 1/4 inch long and 9 grams with tiny pearls.
The only obvious mark I can find is a 14K on the pin. The front of the brooch has tested as 18K.
On the back there are a couple of very lightly scratched numbers that look like 1077 and VX17, but I am not sure.

Interesting about Vernier: "He was one of the first artists to re-imagine medals as jewelry."

Oh, and as to age... It's Art Nouveau so sometime between 1890 and 1910.

Thanks Debora. Yes, mine is either an unsigned version or a copy of Vernier's work that you posted.
My basic google search hasn't found any other example similar to Vernier's or mine. Any idea who could have made this copy (if we assume it is a copy) and when and where?

Since the back is signed 14K but the front part is 18K (and unsigned for purity). Does this mean that maybe the front was produced in one shop (maybe in France) and then the back was added by someone else for export and that is why it is marked 14K?

Maybe I am biased but this version with additional work around the perimeter (I don't know the technical term for it) and with the added pearls looks better than the original work to me :)

To my eye, yours appears to be a copy because the casting isn't quite as fine. And the piece uses pearls rather than diamonds which is a less expensive option.

The quality of the casting details you mentioned is interesting. So how would they have gone about making this copy? Did they have to have the original to create a cast?

This is a side question: how can I clean this without damaging or detaching the pearls? It has a lot of dirt and grime which you can even see in the photos and make it look kind of dull. I wasn't sure if washing it with soap and water was a good idea :)

    Charming brooch, Rays.
Certainly made in different workshops. The 14k indicates a non-European country and also rules out quite a few others.
Do you see any marks on the front? They could be tiny.
Dip a soft cloth in lukewarm soapy water and wipe the dirt off.
Don't soak it in soapy water, and don't use a brush or other hard or abrasive method.

If some gold parts that don't have pearls are still dirty, you can use a cotton bud with alcohol on those. Avoid alcohol on the pearls.
Looks like the girl is picking grapes and the boy brambles and there are berry or grape leaves, so to me the pearls are also a more appropriate depiction of grapes/berries than diamonds are.

Thank you so much for the detailed instructions to clean it. After I clean it I will take a closer look and see if I can see any marks.
And yes, even though this is a copy, to me also it looks nicer than the original.
