It might as well have been! The camp was 40 acres but surrounded by about 4,000 acres of pine and oak forest. It could get mighty lonesome out there, and one winter there was enough snow that I had to park and walk over 1/2 a mile to get to the cabin.

Did you at least have snowshoes? (or a pet Bigfoot to break trail?) I could just see the Jersey Devil, the Chupacabra or Leatherface thinking that was a good spot. I'm not a horror movie fan, but do have a certain appreciation for the fact that the cabin had no handy sewers. No red balloons about that way.

I don't care for horror movies but I used to read some. Haunting of Hill House scared the stuffing out of me! It's been over 50 years since I read it and I can remember a lot of it quite clearly. "WHOSE HAND WAS I HOLDING? " popped up in my head and I got the chills. Hubs started buying me Steven King in the mid 80's and I finally had to tell him to stop and not bring any more home after I read most of IT, couldn't finish it. When I read any more, I read fluff or gardening books. Most of the time I play silly games on my phone.

I do have to admit to an old appreciation for Lovecraft and Poe. Old Edgar was always good for a nice dose of the creeps.

Reading (the theater of the mind) is always much scarier than anything a cinema can conjure.
When the Shining was first published (late '70s), I was up late one night alone reading, came to scene where Danny runs into the naked rotting lady in the bath (Rm. 217)-and felt the hairs on my arms and the nape of my neck rise !
Spun around in my chair, even walked out into the hall for a cautionary peek-chilled to the bone.

The mentioned scene gave me full body chills.Like someone 'walking on my grave'. A remarkably freaky feeling-like 'is somebody in here ?'-weird.
