Picked this up the other day for a few bucks at a thrift store. I assume A.E. Turner (the artist) was a soldier on the USS Greene. Great little drawings and descriptions. Seems to be pretty old based on the paper. Can’t find another like it or even an image of the map online. Figured someone may get a kick out of it. Also wondering if anyone has ever seen it before? No clue what the value could be.

looks like a reasonably competent seamans drawings and musings on his activities at the end of the war...

    It's a one off , U won't find another.
A Navy museum might like it....
    Value....... historic only !

Dagger - this is SO awesome! Does make me sad that Turner's family just dumped it off at a thrift store.

Surprising that it survived to be rediscovered by you, considering the fate of the USS Greene:

Neat! The style reminds me of "cartoon" illustrations in the newspaper to accompany a story. I wonder whether Turner was a professional in civilian life?

I think it may be a print. I was imagining a very small run after he got back from the war. I don’t think it’s the original. I could be wrong, I haven’t taken out a loupe but seems like a print.

I was thinking a military collector would go nuts for something like this. I could be wrong though. If it is indeed a real rarity certainly a small museum might dig it.

Thanks I really like it. An older woman picked it up right before I got to it. Very thankful she decided she didn’t like it :).

I did some reading on the Greene yesterday. It had an interesting journey before that storm tossed it into the rocks. Knocked or helped to knock out a few U-Boats it seems!

I see what you mean for sure . He definitely had some skill and it’s devotedly very cartoony. Maybe I’ll find more about him at some point.

well if it's a print.....it's so very personal that likely only very few were made..

IF I was that 'older woman' you wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to buy it! :D

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Well, on seeing his name, it's not the famous cartoonist who was the war correspondent!!! Too bad.....THAT would probably have been big $$$

Glad I had the right kind of older woman in front of me. The kind that doesn’t like dirty old maps.

I'm not so sure that there would not be another copy. This looks like something that could have been produced for the Greene's "Cruise Book."

It might be a mimeograph. I think it was not terribly unusual for this unit or that to print a sort of local newsletter for internal distribution.

My assumption has been it wasn’t the only one. No reason it couldn’t be but I’ve just assumed it wasn’t. You may be on to something with the “cruise book” idea. I didn’t even know those were a thing. Here’s two images I pulled from cruise books. One of cartoons and one of a hand drawn map, with cartoons!

    Edit: quick fix.

I am not sure how well the cruise books are selling now, but I sold several a few years back for pretty decent money.

The cool thing is that Ancestry has digitized quite a few and indexed all the names and pictures so is someone is searching "military records" for a relative, the Cruise Book pages that have that name will be in the search results.

I just looked a little closer at this. It has light fold marks going the long way. Actually more like it was rolled and then flattened a bit because they aren’t hard actual fold lines. More like when you roll a poster/paper and then it gets flattened from its round shape and lines are created. It was never folded tall/height wise that I can. The height is 18”. I can’t find the dimensions in many cruise book listings but 18” would seem too high for most books. Maybe this image was used in a cruise book but this actual print doesn’t seem to have come out of a book itself. The paper is quite yellow and the ink is quite purple. I don’t know if that provides any clues or not? There are several spots on the paper where it looks like drips of water fell. In those places the paper is white outside of the brown water staining.

    Edit: spelling

Looks like $40-$200 mostly. Average probably $70ish. A few are in that $200 range or higher.
