    It weighs ~5 3/4 pounds.
I've just re-discovered this old-timer buried under 2 boxes of other debris in an overlooked corner; I got it from a friend who closed his antique shop in '95 or so, as a gift...I had admired it for at least a year, an' couldn't afford the $85 he was asking.
I'd like to know if it can be correctly named; an' if it's late 19th C, as I suspect. It came to him with a very nice, large beetle which sold immediately.
Many of the harbors around Puget Sound had shipyards of various sizes 150 years ago, so I'll risk assuming this has local history, rather than being an east or gulf-coast import. Whatever y'all see in it, please do favor me with your thoughts...an' Thanks for lookin'!

Over here that would be known as a Shipwrights Caulking Iron.

    Thanks, Davey!
Does anything about it suggest European origin?

    found on facebook:

Era (1800's) early 1900's Hawsing Iron. The Head on this Tool can be Rotated in 4 different positions.Vintage hawsing iron is 26" long with 3 5/8" blade 1/8 to 1/4"" thick. Chisel is 6" long and head 1 5/8". Good condition all original no repairs, cracks or breaks.
Information I found on this item:
On large ships with heavy hardwood planking like Gazela, an additional step is normally done to drive the caulking tighter, known as hawsing. For this process a large caulking iron attached to a long steel handle is guided down the seam, while a second person repeatedly whacks the iron with an oversize mallet known as a beetle.

Wow! Very Good, an' Thank you sincerely, 'Cakes...I've seen corking done, but it has always been done by one person, an this iron seemed to be made for much heavier work. Hawsing Iron it is!

Funny that TallCakes showed that picture, as my immediate thinking was for caulking decks, not the hull. I have caulked the hull of a carvel built ship and this would be so much work with this iron, but on the deck as shown, perfect! That said, I'd rather be on my knees weilding the caulking mallet than standing up like that!
These are similar to those that I have used....
