komokwa The Truth is out there...!

1st....... those coloured single bands are likely dyed seal gut.... and the basket is an Alaskan grass bundle coiled basket.........

2nd.... I've not seen for a while . It's south west , Mission... maybe California , ... I'm distressed with the damage which will knock down the value considerably.

Thanks so much Komokwa! They are indeed mine. Got them from an old estate collection. I was a bit worried the middle one might be African but that’s neat that it’s a seldom seen example. The damage sucks for sure but better damaged than not at all! I’d have gotten all three ID’s terribly wrong so you expertise is appreciated.

My body and mind are out of sync at the moment...... but unless I can be proven wrong , I'll stick to my assessment for now !

I'll revisit this as soon as I can , or if I have further info !!

    Thank you !

1st one , can I get a close up of the red & blue coloured overlay.?
2nd one... the top rim showing part of the damage...
3rd, design close up and double color rim stitching....

When you have a moment , please !

I agree that the first is Alaskan (Yupik).

The second looks more like an older type of Hausa basket (northern Nigeria - southern Niger).

I think the example komokwa found was misidentified as Native American. That green color is very typical of Hausa baskets.

I suspect the third one is also African, probably from southern Africa.

you could be right ........I was trying to force myself into NA.... but finding a pretty identical 2nd one bothered me..... & I'm much more used to seeing the Hausa , as flat baskets....

I don't like the rim on the 3rd......

and that's why I asked for close ups !!!!!

I think the material on #3 looks a little 'off' for NA, especially visible on the rim as Komo notes.

All three look to have good age to them, partly visible in the different colors between tops and bottoms.

I find coiled baskets more tricky to ID - so much depends on fine points of construction and materials that aren't always easy to tell in photos. It is even more difficult when you get into older African baskets. Styles have changed, they are less well documented, and finding good views of rims and bases is rare.

And in looking at the image on a computer scene (I'm typically on a phone), it may indeed be NA.

    Bottom line, pics are needed.

    Just a thought ......

There are so many African and other ethnic baskets , that present very similar to 1st Nations basketwork ... that at times the waters are muddied and it's hard to tell what's what !

    Specially , on a bad day ! :sorry::sorry:....;)

Thanks for all of the comments and opinions guys! The third basket also made me a bit nervous for NA. If it turns out to not be NA that’ll mean I’m eeking into the right direction on at least getting better with Continental origin opinion. I was kinda split on that one. So I’ll be able to take that positive away if nothing else. I did think they were all pretty old so I was happy to make a safe gamble on them. I’ll try to grab better photos tmrw. Komokwa made some photo requests. Any other requests from 2mb or PP for photos that will be helpful?

    komokwas requests as follows:

1st one , can I get a close up of the red & blue coloured overlay.?
2nd one... the top rim showing part of the damage...
3rd, design closeup and double color rim stitching....

Below is a new image of the middle basket and cropped zoom in of the other two. The crops may not be helpful but maybe the new image will be. Best I can do until tmrw.
