    anything on the artist so
far (not sure if Iam missing something) It definitely was a popular subject at one stage. The flag is interesting: Maybe the representing the old South African flag? Or the Prince’s flag? The painting size is 58x38cm? Thanks for any comments

    J. Stienstra, the name is of northern Dutch origin, but I can't find anything on him.
The flag is the Dutch flag.:) The Prince's flag is orange - white - sky blue.

Thank you AJ for the reply and for trying to find the artist. So a Dutch artist (I was wondering) However personally I really thought the top part of the flag is still orange and not red. But also the blue part does look very dark and not light/sky blue as you say.

A good 'found' painting, I'd say. There's some real energy there, the upward perspective used to celebrate the grandeur of whatever its subject / reference. (I'm going to guess there is a specific reference being made there.) Frame is big and bold too.

Good comments and observation. Gives me something to think/wonder about. It would be very cool if a specific reference was indeed being made. Will do some more searching. I do like the painting. Thank you

This type of maritime 3/4 view of a clipper ship was popular and sometimes referred to as a T. BAILY style who's works date earlier. Even into the 30's -50's folks just like this type of painting - the age of commercial sail was disappearing fast at this time. Yours is a pretty nicely done one . .. generally you see less sail when the weather is heavy. Here's a large one I have done in the 50's, titled 'Nivelle in a gale'. Note reduced sail. upload_2025-9-12_16-19-10.jpeg

Thanks for your reply and for the interesting information. Glad you also think my painting is nicely done. That’s also a very nice painting you have (that looks like heavy seas) and great that it has a title. I was wondering about the other sails (I rather like this detail) in background on the horizon of my painting. Maybe the painting depicts a little fleet doing a certain crossing or on a specific voyage? But then again it would have been great if the ship was named.

Interesting thought. Something like a regatta. Did you do that in these type of ships? Probably they did..

I'm not sure if she's a clipper or schooner.... but they have raced both..

I have been looking at different photos and in my humble (uneducated) opinion/guess and looking at the sail configuration details.
I think she might be a bargue/barc ? Thanks again Komo

(thought o no not another one of those paintings)..............at first ;)

but miles apart............and most importantly i believe shes cutting through waves in the ocean (love that rise of the bow, and angle is good as well)

not to mention that great frame :woot:

..........i think for $8 (what!) it might be hard to turn a profit though..............:(

    ......wait for it

Clipper ship and barque are very nearly the same... only a slight difference in rigging. Now as to the ships in the background - they appear to be single mast sloops or ketches which have fore/aft rigging not square rigged like the featured ship in the foreground. Schooners would have two or more masts, also fore/aft rigged. This is a classic schooner.... PS; near shore back in the day many smaller ships would be on the water [IMG]
