IMG_3323.jpeg IMG_3322.jpeg IMG_3321.jpeg Hi all, sorry not even vintage I know, but I thought it might be interesting and insightful to heard other interpretations/views on this painting. The work is by a well established artist who has exhibited in some ‘big name’ South African art galleries. The work is titled: ‘There’s no such place as far away’ (size 100x 73cm)So what do you see? I think I see the obvious thing: a bunch of little heads or maybe faces (well to be honest that’s the only possible thing that comes to mind) Anyone see something else? Maybe something more in depth? Thanks for any replies.

I like the title every bit as well as the work, Boland.
We inhabit a speck...a mere mote in the universe.

Never was able to properly 'focus' on those ~80's pics where proximity to the image an' the proper mindset allowed one to 'see' something not otherwise plainly visible. This is reminiscent of them, somehow, but far more pleasant to view, an' easier on my eyes.
Eventually, please share the fellow's name with us won't you? Thanks!

Is this yours @Boland? I'd describe it as non representational and see a kind of 'ordered chaos', a mixture of frantic, frenetic individual small areas of paint / color that, when pulled back to a proper distance, settle into a much calmer whole. Abstract Expressionist might also be a term you could use, but I might be wrong about that. I very much like it.

‘There’s no such place as far away’

could also mean - stuck behind a wall

Didn't realize that's the title of a Richard Bach book. Perhaps a bird's eye view?

Thanks for the reply. I don’t hate looking at it but it’s definitely not a favourite of mine. In truth I found the title more intriguing and that made me wonder if I might be missing something. I got that little ‘speck’ and humble feeling looking at some master paintings/art and historic objects in some of the large museums.

Appreciate the comment and I like your description very much. What you said makes one ‘think’ and that’s a good thing. ‘Ordered chaos’is a most
    interesting term. Thank you.

I agree. A pine cone surface actually does look very similar.
    Thanks Aj
