The oval base is slightly recessed, ~3 1/4" X ~1 5/8"; weight is ~19.2 oz. The lip is 1" diameter, with a 0.485" mouth. The overall finish is very fine satin; I can't tell if it's been acid-etched or bead blasted. There are two small places on the base that are not satin finished. I've had it for ~10 years, but just today put a bright flashlight against the base an' looked into the mouth...to find a lovely ruby-red spot on the bottom. There are no indicators about origin or maker, an' nothing about what contents may have been its intended cargo. I don't think it has significant age; perhaps '70s to '90s as a WAG.
Obviously I am without clue about this flask...an' hope some of you glass aficionados can provide relief for my ignorance.
    Thanks for lookin'!

looks a lovely one to me whit. thinking old as well. with collecting sea glass you find old bits of black glass (and theres really no such thing)(or wasn't at the time)

so its usually really thick coloured glass (just impossible to see apart from in the light or held to the sun)

but the form of the bottle is unusual (to me anyway) so hopefully someone in the know can help with how it was made

    i'm thinking a nice one though ;)

with charcoal/gray/black glass, you will see hints of amethyst - sometimes they appear to be 'red' particularly when held up to the light. Really cool bottle - the seams are really fine.

I think it's a machine made bottle, has a inner lip seam and trace of a seam on the lip. I collected mold blown bottles for many years - this one looks machine made.[IMG]

Charlie-Have you got any decent 'mudlarking' sites around your neck of the woods ? I've seen a fair amount of torpedo sodas mucked out of the Thames foreshore on YouTube vids.

quite a few dude, i've located where the local victorian one was (one side of village) as it was marked as so on an old map (imagine my excitement :woot:)

was totally covered by years and years of industrial landfill on top though:(........but once i've got that digger i've got my eye on ;):playful:

That's the tuffy-so many of these old 'glory holes' are covered w/ yards of old backfill.
I figure You've seen those London mudding vids ? Seems like a lot of quite good stuff is just plucked out of the the tidal sand and muck. The tidal ebb & flow sluice it out- like gold panning.
You'd need a nice flat tidal flat for that.

yeah alot of those vids are glory vids, when in reality is a bit like metal detecting............not as glamorous as you think/hope

bad backs and bottle tops mostly :D

Ditto-They find a lot lot...of busted trash. The challenge of detecting is that when you've found your hundredth 1980's nickel-what do you buy for a buck ?!
The ones that consistently crack me up are the GoodWill champions-You'd have just as much luck at treasure in a Dollar Store !

not to say that it can't be possible, and the will of finding something is enough sometimes.

can remember finding a small glass bottle dump (just around the corner from the main modern dump)

and the feeling of pulling them bottles out of the wet sand was an amazing thrill, they just kept coming in all shapes and sizes, and had no idea what i had while digging them out

Virtually all of collection in the photo I posted were dug in Connecticut, USA in the 1970's. There were dumps small and large, many not previously dug. We were dedicated kids - it was challenging, but rewarding . . rusty metal, roots, poison ivy, etc. Kept the BIM bottles, left hundreds of machine made behind. Today I have about 30 of them still, sold most of the 3-400 once owned.

When my parents bought their last house it was in a formerly rural area and right up the street from us was the site of an old logging camp from the 1800s . When we moved there in 1978 it was still mostly rural with tons of woods. One day I was exploring and ran across a brick chimney in the middle of the woods and right behind it was a pile of bottles and rusted cans. I even found mason jars with the glass tops intact. Long story short those woods (long gone now) yielded tons of bottles and jars (also long gone but thats another story!) .I spent many happy hours digging in that swampy area ! I watch the mudlarking videos but honestly I always think to myself theres GOT to be all manners of chemicals and toxins in it ! I guess thats part of getting old is getting paranoid. :)

    Yep-I'm amazed how many Larkers don't wear strong gloves-esp in London...medical waste-HELP !
Don't think the UK Maven of Mud-Nicola White, wears 'em ?

I've watched quite a few of her videos. Just how many of those clay pipes were made?? Seems she pulls a few out every episode. And I'm gobsmacked that they don't wear gloves. I know some gloves are too thick, but even a good rubber glove would be better than nothing.
