Hello Community, First time poster. I inherited my dad's arts and crafts furniture and don't know much about much. A friend said this is a Shaker chair. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Do I need better photos? Thank you!!! Shaker Chair.jpg

It is a reproduction splat-back Windsor chair.

Here is a similar antique chair from England. Note how on this chair seat is a single board, whereas, your chair seat is made up of multiple boards glued together. This is one of the easiest ways to tell that your chair is a reproduction.

Shaker furniture is both functional and unadorned. Here's an example of a Shaker chair.

Hi again, Brad. I keep sharing at the Windsor chair photo you sent. Wow, it is beautiful. Other questions: can you determine the approximate decade of my reproduction? The wood type? The manufacturer? Perhaps these are too common to know?

Shaker chairs are also very lightweight, because they hung on the wall when not in use.

Lots of companies made these so, without a label or catalog page to compare to, impossible to know who made this. I am assuming you are in the US (correct me if wrong) and that it is likely American in origin. If so, it is probably birch or, less likely, maple. It has a walnut stain. Would say this was probably made sometime 1950s-70s. This was their height of popularity here but suppose it could have been made even later. Lack of wear and tear makes me think later, rather than earlier. Does seem to be of better quality than many I see.

Thank you, Kind Sir. I appreciate that. My dad was an antique collector and dealer. I will post all the pieces one by one as I'm having them all repaired and refinished. That may be why you think it is newer. He and I are from the SF Bay Area, but the collection and I are now in Panama City, Panamá.

Yes, the Shakers and Mother Ann were a very special collective.

If it's just for your personal enjoyment ..... have at it , !!

    but.....

doing that much work on an item , before even knowing what it actually is , is not recommended , as it's bound to diminish the value and authenticity of a genuine antique .;):(

Thanks, Johnny. We love it, too. This is El Cangrejo, Crab Town, the Bohemian neighborhood of Panama City, Panamá.

Hi FYI, thought I would share. Here is a traditional Shaker rocker from I believe New Lebanon, NY Shaker Village probably 1890-1910. Light as a feather an very comfortable; perfect guitar playing while seated friend to have around.
