    Hi folks

something else i picked up this week c/s5

me and my eye (ai) both think 20th century studio pottery

i was secretly hoping the other turn of the century but i think the base rim looks suspicious to me :shifty:

    but glorious colour it has

and a nice piece of chinese studio pottery would work just fine and dandy to me

glaze colour a particular name ? (apart from yellow clever dick:rolleyes:)

    any info appreciated

Nice view! The vase would look great with a couple of daffodils in it. Color = daffodil yellow.

Do you think it might be like this Ikea vase, made in Romania?

i both hope and think not sis, looking at the base of that one theres no forced crackle and looks a bit cheapio

...but shape is very similar :shifty:........wouldn't mind seeing another example of the ikea one to see if its more similar

Personally I don’t think it looks like a Chinese vase. Not to say it wasn’t made in China but that’s a different story. The form isn’t refined enough imo, a little thick and clunky, not a typical Chinese yellow (bit French’s mustard) imo, foot rim not right. Colors are hard to get a feel for in photos though. Not to say it’s not a handsome vase but to me I’m not seeing traditional Chinese or anything special. You’ve got it in person though and have a great eye. Could be an imperial treasure for all I know. Chinese pieces decorated in multiple colors with a yellow base are called famille juane. Not used for monochrome yellow though I don’t believe. When it’s the right shade it can be called just imperial yellow.

Here’s a fine imperial yellow bowl.

    very interesting thanks Jd

and know exactly what yer saying ;)

the shape seems way to bulbous? for age

yeah i don't think anything special either but not junk either (if that makes sense)

does strike me as chinese made though

    edit .......ish ;):woot:

Ditto, although Chinese vases can be this yellow.
The flare on the neck is also not very Chinese. I would expect either a straight neck, or one that flares at the top.
I also expect it to be thin-walled and often a white glaze on the inside.

That said, it is a nice vase, striking colour.

These are the shapes I expect on a Chinese vase:

Why would the crackle only be on the base? I agree with the others, Chinese, maybe, maybe not, but not Imperial yellow. As yellow is my favourite colour, I do like your vase.

thanks kworld, yeah i think theres a couple of things going on with it, which is the cause of the scrutiny

if it didn't have that roundish shape i would swear chinese (even try to swear in chinese)

the crackle reminds me of nanking crackle (where it has had ink applied)

there are areas of forced crackle to the sides as well but only in strange sporadic areas, will try and get a shot to show;)

This is the kind of thing I want to do a series of experiments to find out. I wish I had about a dozen identical new vases that could be put through various treatments to see what would happen. Then maybe a dozen of a different material etc.

For example, if you leave your lovely vase with a little water in the bottom out in a freezing weather for awhile then bring it inside and wash it in hot water, how does the glaze look? If you set your vase into a pot of boiling hot water to wash the gunk off and then rinse it in cool water, what then? etc......

(no wonder I barely sleep at night:rolleyes:)

OMG, that is such a beautiful yellow bowl! A bit above my price range however.

it actually looks better inside to be honest

i think it is that wide flared neck (monstrous ) (and not necessarily the base width) that is making it un chinesey

Refined and sexy vs. a tad frumpy and pudgy. Sadly I’m not the first either, not quite the second altogether yet though.
