I just bought this bowl for roughly £50 because I think the quality of the Maki-e painting is very fine at that price, yet I’m unsure of its age.

It’s 18cm in diameter. The style of the butterflies reminds me of Meiji works, while the unusual shape compared to traditional Japanese bowls makes me wonder if this is made for European market. It bears an amateur's repair on one petal-perhaps the whole petal was broken at some point. Also wear of MOP inlays and gold everywhere.

And here’s a box listed at $5000 &sold on 1stdibs…early 20th century. Tho the details are much finer, but the style, especially how the body of butterfly is painted, is almost identical. And what more to ask as I only paid a fraction? IMG_4082.jpeg

True… they are now all over my shelf and table, maybe I should put something in them so they’re not just display items that pile up my space while not doing anything :playful:

They do plenty! They bring you joy every time they catch your eye and how many items can do that? :D This bowl is sooooo lovely! What mastery.
