Featured 1801 Receipt for Duties Paid on Rum

    DS #2 came across this old receipt while we were digging through some boxes of ephemera yesterday. I believe it is a receipt for duties paid on a large bottle of rum. It has an embossed seal which says Massachusetts Supervisors Office and is signed by the Inspector, whose name I can't read. It is dated 1801.
    Can anyone help me learn more about this? Thanks.

    That would be a barrel, not a bottle.

    Not at all sure that's correct. John Brooks was the governor of Massachusetts. Example of signature.

    I think the signatures are similar. Look how the second o is much larger than the first and misshapen by the tail's pull to the k.
